Many thousands of people representing hundreds of agencies, private and government, have descended upon this country in one of the largest humanitarian efforts in history. Right now it's all about helping the people survive...then will come clean-up and rebuilding of infrastructure. Tens of thousands will remain homeless for some time...some migrating to the countryside and to Cap Hatien, while others remain and depend upon temporary shelters in tent cities provided by disaster relief agencies.
As we saw in the tsunami in South Asia, and really in every disaster, natural and man-made, it will be the smallest and weakest that will suffer the most...and for the longest period of time.
The UNICEF estimates of 1 million orphans paint a bleak picture. Some will be relocated to other areas of the country to children's homes, while others will likely remain in the area of devastation. These children are being temporarily cared for in locations around the area in temporary shelters as well as existing children's homes who will be inundated with new children...and new costs. The goverment has closed the country to ALL NEW adoptions until social infrastructure can be restored to the point where they (the government) can begin the tedious and lengthy process of determining which children have surviving parents that can care for them and which children will be considered orphans..."true" or "social."
That means that 1 million children...many of whom are new additions to the newly estimated 163 million orphan children world wide, will need to be cared for and most will never be adopted.
This is where Orphan's Lifeline can help! For a decade Orphan's Lifeline has specialized in funding and managing children's homes in 9 countries...and we were there for the homes in South Asia following the tsunami...supporting them during and after the period of unintended growth as hundreds and even thousands of new orphans showed up at the doorsteps of children's homes...looking for shelter, food...and hope.
Because of this, and in anticipation of the on-going needs of the children who will become orphans due to the earthquake in Haiti, we are creating the Haiti Fund. To donate to this fund, simply click on the button below. All funds will be held in a special account and used specifically to support the needs of existing and new children's homes in Haiti.
The search for survivors is now over...and the death toll is estimated to be between 150,000 and 200,000.
That is one frightening statistic. The other is UNICEF"S estimate that Haiti may now have 1 million orphan children that need care!
