Where : At hundreds of congregations around the United States (Approximately 200 congregations participate each year)
When: November 15th, 2009 (or a date convenient to your congregation.)
Why:
What is Orphan Sunday?: It is a special Sunday set aside for Christians to educate, advocate and take action on the worldwide orphan crisis. Each congregation makes it a special day dedicated to showing Christ's love to thousands of the 143 million orphan children in the world. Each participating congregation is provided with a poster, bulletin inserts and educational materials for the Orphan Sunday Event. We will even provide you with a sermon outline and a DVD presentation to show to the entire congregation. At the end of the service each congregation takes up a free will offering from the congregation. Some congregations match or partially match the offering from their benevolence or missions budget.
Our Goal: While we hope to raise $500,000.00 this year to care for the children in our current homes and expand the number of homes, our goal goes beyond that! In reality, half of our job here at Orphan's Lifeline is to be a voice for orphan children who do not have one otherwise. It is our job to educate, advocate and raise awareness to as many people as we possibly can. It is only when the plight of the orphans is common knowledge and many more caring people are involved that we just might see a break in the cycle that creates orphans. It is always surprising just how many people out there have little or no awarenes of just how bad of a crisis there is in the world in regards to the orphan population. We know that God cares deeply about children and very specifically speaks to our responsibilities towards orphan children. Orphan Sunday is an opportunity for congregations to learn about this plight and get involved through prayer, caring for the children through a special contribution, becoming educated about the crisis, involving the youth so that they, as adults will continue to show compassion to those who suffer. Each and every congregation that participates, then becomes an example to others as well.
What is Orphan Lifeline International's part and where does the money go?: Our part is getting your collected offering to the orphan children in the form of daily care. We have spent nearly a decade developing and fine tuning our programs to be sure that they are efficient and effective. The orphan children are provided with a family style home, food, clothing, medicine, education (spiritual also), children's Bibles, mentoring and nurturing, Enterprise through life-skills training and agriculture and vocation...and much more! Orphan's Lifeline International is a 501(c) 3 Religious Non-Profit, founded by and under the voluntary direction of a board made up of members of the Church of Christ. Here are some references.
Can individuals still participate if the Church doesn't corporately?: While our goal is to involve the entire congregation to raise awareness and give them all the opportunity to participate...Yes, you can participate even if the congregation you belong to isn't going to hold an Orphan Sunday. You can do this in a couple of ways. You can have an Orphan Sunday at your home after services...invite other members, friends and family! If you belong to a small group, womens group or men's group, you can organize Orphan Sunday following services. We would be happy to send you the materials!
How Do We Participate?: That's the easy part. Just click here to fill out the quick form and we will get your participation packet in the mail! God will be glorified and the children and your congregation will receive the blessings!
